“Thanks,” America: Socialism in Canada

This short video presents some interesting history regarding the link between American socialist movements and socialism in Canada. It’s not exhaustive, obviously, and there are points I would like to see better fleshed-out (especially the conclusion), but it does provide some food-for-thought. On a similar note: In the 1930s, the American-initiated Technocracy movement rapidly swept across Western Canada (see the 2010 editions of Forcing Change for more on Technocracy). And Watson Thomson, a leading figure in educational programming in Canada, remarked in his book Turning Into Tomorrow, how excited he was in the 1930s to discover a form of international socialism already embedded in the Western provinces.
